Scuplting The Senses – The Iris Van Herpen Exhibition
Rotterdam is more colourful than you might think, a marvel in itself — but even if it weren't, its vibrant art scene alone would be worth to keep coming back.
The Iris Van Herpen exhibition at Kunsthal was an utterly mind-blowing experience — a complete shift in perspective, a creative firework, an electric shock to the imagination. It was living proof that anything is possible if you truly dare to make it so. Yet to dream this boldly and bring it to life — that takes a genius.
Iris Van Herpen has built an entire universe of her own, fusing fashion, art, craftsmanship, and science. It sounds impossible — and, in a sense, it is. We saw more than a hundred designs, yet not a single repetition or hint of formula. Every single piece was a unique idea, an original concept — and together, they merged into one breathtakingly organic world that seemed to defy the laws of physics and technology.
The most astonishing part was how "natural" everything was. Despite appearances, most of the materials were touchable, wearable, even comfortable. Layers that looked like metallic foil turned out to be tulle; what seemed like stiff plastic was actually latex. It was a masterful fusion of every conceivable technique and material.
The exhibition was profound, precise, and flawless down to the smallest detail — inspiring and deeply thought-provoking. For me, its most powerful message was clear: there are no boundaries. Nothing is impossible.

Filaments such as acetate, acrylic, polyester, and silk are woven into a jacquard, laminated onto vegan suede, and cut into lines in blue and off-white. The texture varies per material, creating a rich tactile effect. Under the microscope, the micrograph reveals the complex weave and chaotic fibres, which vary greatly in texture, colour, and thickness. The colours and textures come to life under magnification, revealing a hidden landscape full of detail.

Egészen elképesztő élmény volt Iris Van Herpen kiállítása a Kusthal-ban, egy teljes világnézet váltás, kreatív boost, elektrosokk. A bizonyítéka annak, hogy bármit, mindent lehet, csak akarni kell. Bár ekkorát álmodni és azt meg is valósítani csak egy zseni képes.
Iris Van Herpen teljes univerzumot alkotott ötvözve a divatot, a művészetet, a kézművességet és a tudományt. Lehetetlennek hangzik – és az is. Több mint száz modellt láttunk, mégsem volt szóismétlés, futószalag, minden ruha egyedi felvetés, egy eredeti gondolat, és mégis az egész anyag egy csodálatosan organikus világgá olvadt össze ellentmondva a fizikai, technikai törvényeknek.
Döbbenet, az anyagok legtöbbike a látszat ellenére érinthető, hordható, élvezhető volt. A fóliának látszó layerek tüllből voltak, a merev műanyagnak tűnő anyagok latexből. Zseniális kombinációja minden létező technikának és anyagnak. Elmélyült, alapos, minden részletében tökéletes kiállítás. Inspiráló, elgondolkodtató. Számomra a legfontosabb üzenete, hogy nincsenek határok, nincs lehetetlen.
