Encounter with The High Priestess
The High Priestess has always felt like a deeply mysterious card to me. I don’t encounter her often — probably because I’m already an intuitive person, far too intuitive at times, so I hardly need reminding. I hear the words, but the tiny shifts in energy, flashing of an eye, unspoken things, vibrations tell me more about a person. My intuition has rarely failed me.
And yet, sometimes I still manage to silence my inner voice — especially when what I want to see is stronger than reality.
He certainly added to the confusion. As long as we randomly crossed paths and gently healed each other’s wounds through small talk and empathy, everything was easy. We expected nothing, simply enjoyed those few gifted moments before drifting on again. But eventually, all those accidental encounters led to a dinner invitation, and suddenly, an icy breeze blew that familiar warmth away.
The soothing and relaxing feeling I usually experienced around him vanished. Instead, I kept hitting walls. My mind went blank, and I couldn't believe how I had misjudged him; my instincts must have failed me. I told myself it probably just meant I wasn’t ready yet, so that's it – time to get back to my work.
Still, one sentence he said kept echoing in my mind because it contradicted everything I had felt about him before. Naturally, as with every personal crisis, I discussed it with my Tarot cards. :-D
That was when I met the High Priestess. She reminded me to stay silent, observe and trust my intuition. I tried… really tried… and eventually turned to WhatsApp instead and directly asked him what on earth he had meant by saying that?!?!
Since then, we’ve been building our own dictionary — and I haven’t regretted a single moment of it.
As for the card itself…
From the perspective of an illustrator, one of the biggest challenges is the many seated figures in tarot: kings, queens, the Emperor, the Empress, and the High Priestess. Her stillness is intentional — it symbolises silence, observation, intuition, and inner strength.
I’ve been trying to find more expressive ways to capture these qualities visually. I’m curious what you’ll think of my reinterpretations once I finally dare to reveal the cards in their full form.
Among the cards I’ve completed, the High Priestess holds the richest symbolism. Here are the most important ones and their meanings:
The Moon at her feet symbolises intuition, the unconscious, cycles, dreams, and feminine energy. It suggests knowledge that is felt rather than logically explained.
The crescent Moon crown
Often linked to the phases of the moon and the divine feminine. It represents psychic awareness, receptivity, and spiritual insight.
The blue robe
Blue is associated with wisdom, calmness, spirituality, and depth of understanding.
The cross on her chest
Usually a solar cross or equal-armed cross, symbolising balance between the spiritual and material worlds.
The Torah represents hidden wisdom, sacred teachings, esoteric knowledge, and truths that are not fully revealed. In many depictions, the scroll is partly concealed, suggesting that not all knowledge is accessible at once.
The pillars (B and J) – The black and white pillars traditionally stand for duality: light and dark, conscious and unconscious, masculine and feminine, severity and mercy. They are often interpreted as Boaz and Jachin, the pillars of Solomon’s Temple.
The veil behind her – a symbol of the barrier between the visible and invisible worlds, conscious awareness and deeper mystery. The High Priestess guards the threshold to the hidden truth.
The pomegranates are associated with fertility, sacred femininity, abundance, and mythic descent into hidden realms.
Water – Often visible flowing behind the veil, symbolising the subconscious, intuition, emotion, and spiritual depth.
The seated posture – unlike action-oriented cards, she is still and composed. Her power comes from observation, silence, and inner knowing rather than outward force.
The High Priestess reminds us to listen instead of react, to trust intuition and to recognise that some truths quietly unfold beneath the surface.
A Főpapnővel sem találkozom gyakran, nyilván, mert egyébként is intuitív típus vagyok, már-már a paranoia határát súrolva. Hallom a szavakat, de amit a rezdülésekből, szemvillanásokból olvasok ki sokkal többet mondanak. A megérzéseimben még sohasem csalatkoztam. Mégis néha sikerül eltompítani őket, amikor erősebb az amit látni akarok mint a valóság. Persze ő is hozzátette amit tudott, teljesen összezavart. Amíg véletlenszerűen összefutottunk helyeken és könnyű csevellyel, empátiával gyógyítottuk egymás sebeit nem volt semmi baj. Nem vártunk semmit, nem akartunk semmit, élveztük annak a pár percnek az ajándékát majd huss, tovább. A sok random találkozás végül vacsorameghívásba torkollott és a meghitt melegséget hirtelen fagyos fuvallat oszlatta szét. Nem találtam azt a megnyugvást ami addig átjárt a közelében – falakba ütköztem. A képernyő üresen villogott a fejemben, nem hittem el, hogy ennyire félreismertem valakit. Végülis belenyugodtam, hogy az antennáim cserben hagytak – és itt el is engedtem a dolgot. De egy mondata folyamatosan visszacsengett a fejemben mert éles ellentmondásban volt mindazzal amit addig tapasztaltam a jelenlétében. Mint minden krízishelyzetet, természetesen ezt is megbeszéltem a kártyáimmal. :-D Akkor találkoztam a Főpapnővel, aki emlékeztetett, hogy figyeljek és hallgassak a megérzéseimre. Próbáltam, ....nagyon... majd a WhatsApp-hoz fordultam direktben rákérdeztem, hogy mégis mit akart azzal a mondattal?!?!... és azóta is a közös szótáron dolgozunk, aminek egyetlen percét sem bántam meg.
Ami a kártyát illeti, egy illusztrátor szemszögéből a legnagyobb kihívást a tarot számos ülő alakja jelenti: királyok, királynők, a Császár, a Császárnő és természetesen a Főpapnő. Bár ez mind fontos részlet és a Főpapnő esetében a csendet, a megfigyelést, az intuíciót és a belső erőt szimbolizálja.
Jó ideig nem tértem le az ösvényről, de mostanság igyekszem kifejezőbb megoldást találni. Kíváncsi vagyok, mit gondoltok majd ezekről, ha végre meg merem mutatni a kártyákat teljes valójukban.
Az eddig elkészültek közül a Főpapnő hordozza a leggazdagabb szimbolikát. Íme a legfontosabbak és a jelentésük:
A lábánál fekvő Hold a belső tudás, a meggyőződés, az intuíció, a tudattalan, a ciklusok, az álmok és a női energia szimbóluma.
Fogyatkozó Hold a koronáján a holdfázisokat, az isteni nőiességet, a fogékonyságot és spiritualitást jelöli.
A kék köpeny a bölcsességet, nyugalmat, spiritualitást.
A napkereszt vagy egyenlő ágú kereszt a mellkasán a spirituális és az anyagi világ közötti egyensúlyt szimbolizálja.
A Tóra – rejtett bölcsességet, igazságot, szent tanításokat, ezoterikus tudást jelképez. Sok ábrázolásban a tekercs részben rejtett, ami arra utal, hogy nem minden tudás érhető el egyszerre.
Boáz és Jákhin, Salamon templomának oszlopai (B és J): A fekete és fehér oszlopok a kettősség jelképei, a fény és a sötétség, a tudat és a tudattalan, a férfi és a női értékek, a szigorúság és irgalom.
A fátyol a látható és a láthatatlan világ, a tudatos tudatosság közötti akadály szimbóluma. A Főpapnő őrzi az átjárót.
A gránátalma a termékenységet, a szent nőiességet, bőséget jelöl.
A víz a tudatalattit, az intuíciót, az érzelmeket és a spirituális mélységet szimbolizálja.
A Főpapnő nyugodt és kiegyensúlyozott testtartása azt mutatja, hogy az ereje a megfigyelésből, csendből és belső tudásból fakad, nem pedig külső erőből.
