Antwerp looks good on us
...so Alwin and I decided to celebrate. Not the grand finale, just the moment of putting down a burden I’d been carrying for far too long.
I’m not sure why we chose Antwerp. The city must have pretty impressive social media marketing, because with all its noise and chaos, it seems like one of the least suitable places for relaxation. And yet, for three whole days, we were in Heaven.
The faded luxury of the Radisson Blu Central wrapped us in familiar warmth. Thanks to a lovely receptionist, our room (533) overlooked Antwerp Central Station. We opened the curtains and fell asleep in the embrace of the glowing city lights. The sirens of police cars, ambulances and fire engines were active all night, thanks to the lively nightlife around the station, but we barely noticed.
Using GPS in Antwerp is totally pointless. No matter how desperately you need it, it simply refuses to cooperate. For three days, we chased the ghost of Le Pain brasserie, along with several other restaurants and bakeries on my list. Eventually, we put our phones away, stuck to the main streets and followed our instincts, and finally we managed to find acceptable places to eat. (It’s funny how obsessed I’ve become with culinary pleasures as I grow older – they’re a priority now.:-D)
The Diamond District was a huge disappointment. Honestly, I couldn’t figure out what I was supposed to adore. A stone, on its own, does very little for me unless there’s some interesting design involved. Since it was in our way, we couldn’t skip it.
The Cathedral of Our Lady is simply magnificent, although the tickets are rather expensive. And no matter how convincingly Alwin explained at the entrance that I looked barely eighteen, the ticket seller remained unimpressed. At least I was deeply touched. :-D
We weren’t the only ones trying our luck, and plenty of visitors seemed to find the price unfair. Ok, I understand: seeing a Rubens altarpiece is hardly an everyday experience.
Most blogs recommend the bar inside the cathedral, but I couldn’t quite feel its calling, so De Plek remained unexplored.
The sculpture of Nello and Patrasche, in front of the cathedral, captured my heart with its charming figures and heartbreaking story. The Grote Markt, the Stadhuis, Brabo’s statue and fountain, Het Steen — all wonderful. But the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) is an absolute must.
The rain was pouring down, and fierce storms accompanied us every single day. And yet, we were glowing, and people smiled at us wherever we went.
Just as in Ghent, we found a Cru super-super-supermarket. It solved all our problems, because finding good bakeries and restaurants in Antwerp requires some effort. In Ghent, we were spoiled.
On our last morning, we finally discovered Bakery Canteen, where we found a proper feast and peace. We fell quiet, absorbed in watching an elegantly dressed elderly couple at the table opposite us. They radiated aristocratic elegance as they enjoyed their breakfast. It began simple, but the menu gradually expanded. Croissants and pastries were followed by more substantial dishes and the occasional glass of champagne. Clearly, they were celebrating something. Perhaps another day together. Or I was projecting my own feelings onto them.
We were enchanted by the harmony and warmth they radiated. They didn’t talk much, but the love surrounding them gave us comfort and peace. When they were ready to leave, the gentleman gave his wife a way. Then he turned around and looked at us until our eyes met.
I smiled.
He smiled back.
There was nostalgia in his eyes, and warmth. Whatever it was, he seemed to find genuine pleasure in us.
They left a deep impression on our souls, along with a few unsettling questions: How long will our relationship last? Will we grow old together? How much time do we have left? How much of it will we spend being active and enjoying life, and how much will be devoted to dealing with illness?
Heavy questions. A very different set of considerations from the ones when you choose a partner in your youth.
At our age, a relationship has different priorities: No other people’s opinions affect us. There’s no need for a glossy finish or perfection, no need to look/be cool. There are no children or shared property keeping us together. It’s something else entirely. Something more. Something honest: qualities and free will.
After an almost missed checkout, I wanted to take pictures of the magical Fiera restaurant. Since it was on our way towards the city centre, I figured that even if GPS failed us again, we could somehow fill our last few hours with entertainment...As if that had ever been a concern.
Throughout all our holidays so far, the only time we’ve been silent has been while we were asleep.
I would never have found the restaurant if a couple hadn’t suddenly turned sharply in front of us, blocking our way. Our speed dropped below that of light itself, giving me just enough time to spot the logo on the door and follow them inside.
After a breakfast that had lasted until midday, I wasn’t open for a four-course lunch. But the charm of the place grabbed me. And so, with barely twenty minutes between breakfast and lunch, we spent roughly six hours eating, drinking and enjoying each other’s company. Putting the crown on the holiday.
Every time we travel together, something seems to unfold between us. Something I can’t quite put into words. Every time we agree: what we’re experiencing is something different we have known or hoped for, a harmony so complete that we can’t seem to get enough of. And we wish it would never end.
A Radisson Blu Central kopott fénye ismerős melegséggel ölelt körül, a recepciós hölgynek köszönhetően a szobánkból (533) csodás kilátás nyílt a központi pályaudvarra (Antwerp Central Train Station) .
Antwerpenben a GPS használata teljesen felesleges. Bár szükség lenne rá, nem működik. Három napon át kergettük a Le Pain brasserie szellemét, és még pár étterem-pékség hűlt helyét sikerült meglátogatnunk a listámról. Végül eltettük a telefont, a fő csapáson maradtunk, és az ösztöneinkre hallgatva szinte mindig megtaláltuk a számításunkat a városközpontban. Vicces, ahogy öregszem, egyre erősebb a fókusz a kulináris élvezeteken.
A katedrális előtt látható 'Nello and Patrasche' szobor karaktereinek bájos alakja és szomorú története sokáig elkísért.
